Students at Brookview Elementary in Waukee will experience new heights of physical fitness when they begin using a new Rock Climbing Wall, the first of its kind in the Waukee Community School District.
Physical Education teacher Jamie Seiler was awarded a classroom grant from the Foundation in 2019 to purchase and install the wall. The project was delayed due to COVID-19, however, the wall is now installed and waiting for kids to try it out!
“We have been outside for PE most of the school year. I am trying to figure out a safe way to utilize the wall during COVID without ruining the wall with the disinfecting spray. I’m hoping to use it second semester,” Seiler said.
Once students are able to start using the wall, rock climbing will be added to the PE curriculum, and students at every grade level will use it every day. Seiler is enthusiastic about what the wall will do for students. “The rock climbing wall will allow students to focus on strength training, agility, challenge, coordination, problem-solving, risk-taking, and build positive self-esteem,” she said.
