Finding a Home in Waukee

Five English Language learners who recently arrived in Waukee had to leave their home countries, but are finding community and belonging in our district. A teacher at Northwest High School works with these incredible students and shared with the Foundation that it’s been tough for the students to develop a deep sense of belonging and connectedness in school due to cultural and language barriers.

The teacher discovered the students all love soccer. She connected them with the Northwest High School soccer coach and helped register them for the team, but knew the students did not have money for the necessary equipment. She asked the Foundation for support in purchasing cleats, shin guards, soccer balls, and team warmup jackets. These student athletes enjoyed a shopping spree at Soccer Master to pick up all the necessary equipment. Upon learning the students’ story, Soccer Master gave a 25% discount on the purchases.

We are thrilled to support these amazing student athletes. We are also honored to be in partnership with generous organizations and businesses, such as the Northwest High School Athletics Booster Club, who split the costs of the equipment with us, and Soccer Master, for the generous discount, ensuring our dollars go as far as possible.

The Foundation has a Financial Hardship fund, which supports efforts from teachers and counselors to ensure students have what they need to be successful in school. Participation in after-school sports and activities drives the Foundation's goals to ensure all students have access to opportunities that enhance wellness and sense of belonging. We cannot wait to cheer on the team this spring and we're so thankful these student athletes call Waukee home.
