Food Support Partnership

The Waukee Community Schools Foundation is aware of the growing need for food assistance within our Waukee Schools community. To provide some perspective, last year, some schools in our district were ordering up to 600 additional snacks each month to meet the need seen by teachers, nurses, and counselors. The Foundation has developed a new collaboration with Hunger Free Dallas County, Eat Greater Des Moines, and Waukee Area Christian Services to provide food assistance to students at all grade levels.

This partnership will not only provide food and snack items to schools, but will also provide necessary items to store the food. Refrigerators are available to every school that wants one. For example, Waukee High School recently received a full-size refrigerator in the activities office to keep snacks and food items for students who stay after school for athletics and other activities. Dorm-size fridges may be more suitable for elementary school nurses or counselors to store extra snacks for hungry students.

The partnership will also provide microwaves to warm up heated meals and shelving for non-perishable food storage. Schools will also be able to receive extra snacks as applicable, as well as meals for secondary students who stay after school for activities.

Right now, food deliveries are happening twice a week at Waukee High School and Prairieview School. The Foundation anticipates rolling out the program to more schools throughout the year.
